Patchwork Beast

The first ecocentric game from Aspen Games, a not-for-profit game development startup. Selected for "Best Art" at SXSW GDC² 2025.

Project Details

Patchwork Beast is the flagship title from Aspen Games, a not-for-profit startup driven by a passion for environmental stewardship and interactive storytelling. The core mission is to develop "ecocentric" games—experiences that are not only entertaining but also carry a strong educational and environmental message. These games are designed to foster a deeper connection with nature and raise awareness about critical ecological issues, such as conservation, biodiversity, and climate change, in an engaging and non-preachy manner. The development process is centered on creating beautiful and immersive worlds for major gaming platforms, including Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Using industry-standard engines like Unity and Unreal, the team focuses on a cross-platform strategy to ensure the games can reach the widest possible audience. The gameplay mechanics are often designed to reflect ecological principles, encouraging players to think about balance, sustainability, and the long-term consequences of their actions within the game world. The project has gained significant traction and recognition within both the gaming and academic communities. It was selected for presentation at the UT Austin Digital Demo Day in 2023 and was honored with the "Best Art" award at the prestigious SXSW GDC² event in 2025. These achievements highlight the growing interest in games that offer meaningful content and underscore the potential of interactive entertainment as a powerful medium for positive change.
